The physiology, pathology and potential therapeutic application of serotonylation

چکیده

ABSTRACT The classical neurotransmitter serotonin or 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), synthesized from tryptophan, can be produced both centrally and peripherally. Through binding to functionally distinct receptors, is profoundly implicated in a number of fundamental physiological processes pathogenic conditions. Recently, has been found covalently incorporated into proteins, newly identified post-translational modification termed serotonylation. Transglutaminases (TGMs), especially TGM2, are responsible for catalyzing the transamidation reaction by transferring glutamine residues target proteins. Small GTPases, extracellular matrix protein fibronectin, cytoskeletal proteins histones most reported substrates serotonylation, their functions triggered this modification. This Review highlights roles serotonylation physiology diseases provides perspectives pharmacological interventions ameliorate disease treatment.

The Physiology, Pathology, and Pharmacology of Voltage-Gated Calcium Channels and Their Future Therapeutic Potential.

Voltage-gated calcium channels are required for many key functions in the body. In this review, the different subtypes of voltage-gated calcium channels are described and their physiologic roles and pharmacology are outlined. We describe the current uses of drugs interacting with the different calcium channel subtypes and subunits, as well as specific areas in which there is strong potential fo...

The apelinergic system: the role played in human physiology and pathology and potential therapeutic applications.

Apelin is a recently discovered peptide, identified as an endogenous ligand of receptor APJ. Apelin and receptor APJ are expressed in a wide variety of tissues including heart, brain, kidneys and lungs. Their interaction may have relevant pathophysiologic effects in those tissues. In fact, the last decade has been rich in illustrating the possible roles played by apelin in human physiology, nam...

Physiology and therapeutic potential of the thymic peptide thymulin.

Thymulin is a thymic hormone exclusively produced by the epithelial cells of the thymus. After its discovery and initial characterization in the '70s, it was demonstrated that the production and secretion of thymulin are strongly influenced by the neuro-endocrine system. Conversely, a growing body of evidence, to be reviewed here, suggests that thymulin is a hypophysiotropic peptide. Additional...
